Chennai disappointed; Dravid-led RCB win

CSK made no changes to their playing eleven.

RCB made three changes to their playing eleven – Bharat Chipli, Cameron White and Zaheer Khan made way for Virat Kohli, Mark Boucher and Vinay Kumar.

On winning the toss, Rahul Dravid, RCB’s skipper, chose to bat.

The first Powerplay of RCB’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 23, and lost a couple of wickets.

Jacques Kallis, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Ten balls into the match, he was caught by Stephen Fleming. Needless to say, Manpreet Gony was in seventh heaven.

Shreevats Goswami, whose 19-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. Twenty-three balls later, he was caught by Parthiv Patel. Gony broke the 15-run stand.

Kohli, whose 16-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. Sixteen balls later, he was caught by Albie. Muttiah Muralitharan broke the (Mork)eleven-run stand.

RCB scored 50 off 11.4 overs (70 balls). CSK had conceded three extras at that point.

Mark Boucher, whose 15-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 17. Five overs after Misbah’s dismissal, he was trapped leg before wicket by Morkel, who broke the 35-run stand.

Dravid, whose 39-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 47. Eleven balls later, he was caught by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, CSK’s skipper. Morkel broke the 21-run stand.

RCB scored 100 off 17.3 overs (105 balls). CSK had conceded four extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Balachandra Akhil, whose seven-ball innings included a boundary, scored half-a-dozen. He was unbeaten.

Praveen Kumar, whose 11-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 21. Seventeen balls after Dravid’s dismissal, Morkel broke the 27-run stand.

The eight-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Vinay, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was dismissed by Morkel.

Anil Kumble, the player of the match, faced a couple of balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

RCB scored 126 for the loss of eight wickets off 20 overs.

Each of the five bowlers bowled four overs apiece.

Makhaya Ntini, who was wicketless, conceded 27.

Balaji and Muralitharan picked up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 34, the latter conceded 19.

Gony, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 11. He picked up two wickets.

Morkel, who conceded 32. He picked up four scalps.

The first Powerplay of CSK’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 44, without the loss of a wicket.

CSK’s openers put on 50 off 6.3 overs (40 balls). The number of extras they had conceded at that point gave RCB no reason to be in seventh heaven. While Patel’s contribution to the partnership was 20, Fleming’s contribution to it was 23.

Patel, whose 29-ball innings included four boundaries, eventually scored 24. Fifty-five balls into the chase, he was caught by Kumble, who broke the 60-run partnership.

Dhoni, who faced eight balls, scored four. Eleven balls later, he was caught by Kumble. Vinay broke the five-run stand.

Fleming, whose 40-ball innings included three boundaries and a couple of sixes, eventually scored 45. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Akhil. Kumble broke the 19-run stand.

Suresh Raina, whose 20-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 21. He was unbeaten.

Subramaniam Badrinath, who faced three balls, scored a run. Four balls later, he was trapped (Kumb)leg be‘four’ wicket.

Morkel, who faced five balls, scored a run. Nine balls later, he was caught by Vinay. Dale Steyn broke the six-run stand.

The sixth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan, who faced three balls, didn’t get off the mark. Three balls later, he was caught by Kallis off the bowling of Steyn.

CSK scored 100 off 17.1 overs (105 balls). RCB had conceded nine extras at that point.

Gony, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary, scored four. Ten balls after Sivaramakrishnan’s dismissal, he was caught by Steyn. Praveen Kumar broke the 15-run stand.

The eighth-wicket pair put on a couple. Balaji, who faced four balls, D(rav)idn’t get off the mark. Four balls later, ‘The Wall’ and Goswami ran him out.

Ntini, who faced half-a-dozen balls, didn’t get off the mark. He was unbeaten.

RCB eventually conceded a dozen extras. CSK, who scored 112 for the loss of eight wickets off 20 overs, lost by 14 runs.

Akhil bowled an over, conceding four. He was wicketless, as was Kallis, who bowled four overs, conceding 15.
