Neither RR nor CSK made any changes to their playing eleven.
On winning the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, CSK’s skipper, chose to bat.
The first Powerplay of CSK’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay
– was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 38, and lost four wickets.
CSK’s openers didn’t get off the mark. Parthiv Patel, who faced a ball, didn’t
open his account. A ball into the match, he was trapped leg before wicket by
Sohail Tanvir, the player of the match.
Stephen Fleming, whose faced a couple of balls, scored a run. He was
trapped leg be‘four’ wicket by Tanvir, who broke the one-run stand.
Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan, whose 10-ball innings included a boundary,
scored five. A dozen balls later, he was caught by Shane Warne, RR’s skipper.
Tanvir broke the 10-run stand.
Subramaniam Badrinath, whose 14-ball innings included three boundaries,
scored 15. Eighteen balls later, he was caught by Shane Watson, who broke the
27-run stand.
Dhoni had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a run. A
dozen balls later, he was caught by Graeme Smith. Warne broke the six-run
stand.
CSK scored 50 off 8.5 overs (53 balls). RR had conceded half-a-dozen extras
at that point.
Suresh Raina, whose run-a-ball innings included a couple of boundaries,
scored 27. Thirty-nine balls after Dhoni’s dismissal, he was caught by Tanvir.
Munaf Patel broke the 44-run stand.
Joginder, who faced a ball, failed to get off the (Shar)mark. Three
balls later, he was caught by Tanvir. Patel broke the run-a-ball stand.
Albie Morkel, whose 33-ball innings included four boundaries and a six,
scored 42. Eight balls later, Tanvir broke the five-run stand.
Manpreet Gony, who faced four balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten.
The ninth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Muttiah Muralitharan, who
faced three balls, didn’t open his account. Three balls later, he was dismissed
by Tanvir.
CSK scored 100 off 18.3 overs (111 balls). The number of extras they had
conceded gave RR no reason to be in seventh heaven. That was, incidentally, the
number of extras they eventually conceded.
Makhaya Ntini, whose 12-ball innings included a couple of boundaries,
scored 11. Fourteen balls after Muralitharan’s dismissal, Tanvir broke the
13-run stand.
CSK were bundled out for 109 off 19 overs.
Siddharth Trivedi and Yusuf Pathan bowled a couple of wicketless overs apiece.
While the former conceded 17, the latter conceded nine.
Warne, who bowled three overs, conceded 29. He picked up a wicket, as
did Watson, who bowled four overs, conceding 19.
Patel, who bowled four overs, conceded 16. He picked up a couple of
wickets.
Tanvir, who bowled four overs, conceded 14. He picked up half-a-dozen
scalps.
The first Powerplay of RR’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay
– was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 44, without the loss of
a wicket.
RR’s openers scored 50 off 6.4 overs (41 balls). CSK had conceded nine extras
at that point. While Smith’s contribution to the partnership was 23, Swapnil
Asnodkar’s contribution to it was 21.
Asnodkar, whose 30-ball innings included five boundaries, eventually
scored 32. Sixty-one balls into the chase, he was caught by Ntini. Vidyut broke
the 78-run partnership.
Pathan, whose five-ball innings included a six, scored eight. Eleven
balls later, he was caught by Raina. Muralitharan broke the 14-run stand.
RR scored 100 off 12.5 overs (78 balls). CSK had conceded 21 extras at
that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras eventually conceded.
Smith, whose 44-ball innings included four boundaries, eventually scored
35. He was unbeaten, as was Watson, who scored 14. His eight-ball innings
included a boundary and a six.
RR scored 110 for the loss of a couple of wickets off 14.2 overs, won by
eight wickets with 34 balls to spare.
Morkel, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded 10.
Raina, who bowled eight wicketless balls, conceded 10.
Gony and Ntini bowled three wicketless overs apiece. While the former
conceded 25, the latter, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 17.
