Ganguly-led KKR win; Hyderabad disappointed

KKR made no changes to their playing eleven.

On winning the toss, V V S Laxman – DC’s skipper, who was making his Tweny20 debut – chose to bat.

The first Powerplay of DC’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 39, and lost a couple of wickets.

Venugopal Rao, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary, scored 14. Twenty balls into the (Shar)match, he was caught by Murali Kartik. Ishant broke the 21-run stand.

Laxman, who faced half-a-dozen balls, failed to get off the mark. Seven ballS(huk)later, he was caught by Laxmi Ratan. Ashok Dinda broke the one-run stand.

Adam Gilchrist, whose 22-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes, scored 23. Twenty-nine balls later, he was caught by Mohammad Hafeez. Kartik broke the 25-run stand,

The fourth-wicket pair didn’t get off the (Shar)mark. Rohit, who faced three balls, didn’t open his account. Three balls later, he was caught by Wriddhiman Saha off the bowling of Kartik.

DC scored 50 off 9.2 overs (58 balls). KKR had conceded five extras at that point.

Although his innings included a boundary, Scott Styris had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored half-a-dozen. Eighteen balls later, Hafeez broke the 11-run stand.

Arjun Yadav, son of former India off-spinner Shivlal, scored 10. His run-a-ball innings included a six. Seventeen balls later, he was caught by Dinda. David Hussey, the player of the match, broke the 13-run stand.

DC scored 100 off 16.5 overs (103 balls). KKR had conceded 10 extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Andrew Symonds, whose 39-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and as many sixes, scored 32. Nineteen balls after Arjun’s dismissal, he was caught by Hussey. Ajit Agarkar broke the 33-run stand.

Chaminda Vaas, who faced a ball, failed to get off the mark. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Sourav Ganguly, KKR’s skipper. Agarkar broke the one-run stand.

Sanjay Bangar, whose 10-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 14. Three balls later, he was caught by Saha. Kartik broke the three-run stand.

Rudra Pratap Singh, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

The last-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Pragyan Ojha didn’t face a ball. A ball after Bangar’s dismissal, Hafeez and Saha ran him out.

DC were bundled out for 110 off 18.4 overs.

Hussey, Dinda and Ishant – whose spell included a (Shar)maiden – bowled three overs each, conceding 35, 18, and nine, respectively. Each of them picked up a wicket, as did Hafeez, who bowled four overs, conceding eight.

Agarkar, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded 19. He picked up a couple of wickets.

Kartik, who bowled 3.4 overs, conceded 17. He picked up three scalps.

The first Powerplay of KKR’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 26, and lost three wickets.

Brendon McCullum, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Eight balls into the chase, he was caught by Rohit. Singh broke the six-run stand.

Ricky Ponting, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. Five balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Vaas, who broke the 10-run stand.

Saha, who faced 17-ball innings included a boundary, scored 10. Thirteen balls later, he was caught by Styris. Vaas broke the five-run stand.

KKR scored 50 off 11.2 overs (68 balls). DC had conceded 16 extras at that point.

Ganguly, whose 30-ball innings included a boundary, scored just 14. Fifty-two balls after Saha’s dismissal, Ojha broke the 47-run stand.

Hafeez, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 13. Twenty-one balls later, he was caught by Symonds. Ojha broke the 20-run stand.

A hundred balls into the chase, the floodlights failed. KKR had scored 89 for the loss of five wickets at that point. While Hussey was batting on 21, Shukla hadn’t opened his account.

KKR scored 100 off 18 overs (109 balls). DC had conceded 27 extras at that point.

Hussey, whose 43-ball innings included a boundary and three sixes, eventually scored 38. He was unbeaten, as was Shukla, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scoring four.

DC eventually conceded 28 extras. KKR, who scored 112 for the loss of five wickets off 19 overs, won by five wickets with an over to spare.

Symonds, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 20.

Bangar, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 19.

Styris, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 19.

Singh, who bowled three overs, conceded 15. He picked up a wicket.
