DC made one change to their playing eleven – V V S Laxman made way for
Venugopal Rao.
On winning the toss, Adam Gilchrist, DC’s skipper and the player of the match,
chose to field.
The first Powerplay of CSK’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay
– was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 34, and lost three wickets.
Patel, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored (Parth)IV. His runs came by way
of a boundary. An over into the match, he was caught by Rudra Pratap Singh.
Paidikalva Vijaykumar broke the four-run stand.
Anirudha had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored just a run.
Fifteen balls later, he was caught by Shahid Afridi. Rudra Pratap broke the
11-run stand.
Stephen Fleming, whose 16-ball innings included a couple of boundaries,
scored 14. Thirteen balls later, he was caught by Rohit Sharma. Scott Styris
broke the 18-run stand.
Subramaniam Badrinath, who faced four balls, (Afri)didn’t get off the
mark. Seven balls later, he was caught by Herschelle Gibbs. The Pakistani broke
the 10-run stand.
CSK scored 50 off eight overs (48 balls). DC had conceded eight extras
at that point.
Suresh Raina, whose 21-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 32.
Forty balls after Badrinath’s dismissal, he was caught by Sharma. Sanjay Bangar
broke the 39-run stand.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, CSK’s skipper, scored 23. His 31-ball innings
included a couple of boundaries. Eight balls later, he was caught by Afridi.
Pragyan Ojha broke the four-run stand.
Albie Morkel, whose 19-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of
sixes, scored 29. He was unbeaten.
CSK scored 100 off 16.2 overs (98 balls). DC had conceded 10 extras at
that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually
conceded.
Joginder Sharma, whose 10-ball innings included a boundary and a six,
scored 16. Twenty-three balls after Dhoni’s dismissal, Rudra Pratap broke the
38-run stand.
Manpreet Gony, whose six-ball innings included a couple of sixes, scored
15. He was unbeaten.
CSK scored 144 for the loss of seven wickets off 20 overs.
Afridi, Styris and Vijaykumar bowled three overs each, picking up a wicket
apiece. They conceded 27, 24, and 17, respectively.
Bangar and Ojha bowled four overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. They
conceded 36 and 22, respectively.
Rudra Pratap, who bowled three overs, conceded a dozen. He picked up a
couple of scalps.

at that point.
The second-wicket pair put on 50 off 31 balls. While Gilchrist’s contribution
to the partnership was 41, Styris’ contribution to it was 10. Extras’ contribution
to the partnership was a couple.
Gilchrist’s half-century – which included half-a-dozen boundaries and a
couple of sixes – came off 34 balls.
His 36-ball innings included seven boundaries, in addition to the
aforementioned number of sixes, eventually scored 54. Thirty-four balls after
Gibbs’ dismissal, he was caught by Badrinath. Morkel broke the 54-run
partnership.
Styris, whose 41-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, eventually
scored 36. He was unbeaten.
DC scored 100 off 12.5 overs (79 balls). CSK had conceded four extras at
that point.
Rohit, whose 17-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six,
scored 23. Thirty-eight balls after Gilchrist’s dismissal, he was caught by
Badrinath. Muttiah Muralitharan broke the 47-run stand.
Afridi, whose six-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and as
many sixes, scored 20. He was unbeaten.
CSK eventually conceded five extras. DC, who scored 148 for the loss of
three wickets off 18 overs, won by seven wickets with a couple of overs to
spare.
Joginder, who bowled three overs, conceded 45. He was wicketless, as was
Makhaya Ntini, who bowled four overs, conceding 37.
Gony, who bowled three overs, conceded 15. He picked up a wicket, as did
Morkel and Muralitharan, who bowled four overs apiece. While the former
conceded 26, the latter conceded 24.
