CSK made one change to their playing eleven – Andrew Flintoff made way for Jacob Oram.
DC made a couple of changes to their playing eleven –
Dwaraka Ravi Teja and Harmeet Singh made way for Azharuddin Bilakhia and
Twenty20 debutant Shoaib Ahmed.
On winning the toss, Adam Gilchrist, DC’s skipper,
chose to field.
The first Powerplay of CSK’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay
– was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 62, and lost a wicket.
CSK’s openers didn’t get off the mark. Parthiv Patel, who faced a couple
of balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of balls into the match, he was
caught by Gilchrist off the bowling of Fidel Edwards.
CSK scored 50 off 4.4 overs (30 balls). DC had conceded four extras at
that point.
The second-wicket pair put on 50 off 28 balls. While Matthew Hayden’s contribution
to the partnership was 29, Suresh Raina’s contribution to it was 17. Extras’ contribution
to the partnership was four.
Suresh Raina, whose 19-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of
sixes, eventually scored 25. Thirty-nine balls after Patel’s dismissal, he was
caught by Rohit Sharma. Pragyan Ojha broke the 64-run partnership.
Ten overs into the match, the drinks break was taken. CSK had scored 88
for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Hayden’s contribution to
the partnership was 45, the contribution of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, their
skipper, to it was 13.
CSK scored 100 off a dozen overs (74 balls). DC had conceded half-a-dozen
extras at that point.
Dhoni, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary and a six, eventually
scored 22. Thirty-four balls after Raina’s dismissal, he was caught by Ahmed.
Ojha broke the 38-run stand.
Hayden, whose 35-ball innings included eight boundaries, eventually
scored 49. Three balls later, he was caught by Rohit. Ojha broke the one-run
stand.
Oram, whose 29-ball innings included four boundaries and a couple of
sixes, scored 41. He was unbeaten.
Although his innings included a boundary and a six, Albie Morkel had no
reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored 13. Twenty-three balls after Oram’s
dismissal, he was caught by Rudra Pratap Singh. Venugopal Rao broke the 26-run
stand.
CSK scored 150 off 17.4 overs (108 balls). DC had conceded half-a-dozen extras
at that point.
Subramaniam Badrinath, whose nine-ball innings included a boundary,
scored eight. Eighteen balls after Morkel’s dismissal, he was caught by Singh,
who broke the 36-run stand.
Manpreet Gony, who didn’t face a ball, was unbeaten.
The number of extras they eventually conceded gave DC no reason to be in
seventh heaven. CSK scored 165 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets off 20
overs.
Dwayne Smith, who bowled an over, conceded 17. He was wicketless, as was
Ahmed, who bowled three overs, conceding 31.
Singh and Rohit bowled three overs each, picking up a wicket apiece.
While the former conceded 32, the latter conceded 18.
Rao and Edwards bowled four overs each, picking up a wicket apiece.
While the former conceded 35, the latter conceded 21.
Ojha, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded 11. He picked up a couple
of scalps.

V V S Laxman, who faced five balls, scored four. Eleven balls later, he
was caught by Oram. Raina broke the eight-run stand.
Ten overs into the chase, the drinks break was taken. DC had scored 85
for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Gibbs’ contribution to
the partnership was 30, Rohit’s contribution to it was four.
DC scored 100 off 11.2 overs (68 balls). CSK had conceded three extras
at that point.
Gibbs’ half-century – which included five boundaries and a six – came off
46 balls.
He eventually scored 69 off 56 balls, which included half-a-dozen
boundaries and a couple of sixes. He was unbeaten.
Rohit, whose (Dho)nineteen-ball innings included a six, eventually
scored 18. Thirty-seven balls after Laxman’s dismissal, he was caught behind. Lakshmipathy
Balaji broke the 39-run stand.
Smith, whose five-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored a
dozen. Ten balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Muralitharan, who
broke the 16-run stand.
DC scored 150 off 18 overs (109 balls). CSK had conceded nine extras at
that point.
Bilakhia, whose 14-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. He
was unbeaten.
CSK eventually conceded 10 extras. DC, who scored 169 for the loss of
four wickets off 19.3 overs, won by half-a-dozen wickets with three balls to
spare.
Gony and Joginder Sharma bowled a wicketless over apiece. While the
former conceded 20, the latter conceded 14.
Oram and Morkel bowled three wicketless overs apiece. While the former
conceded 28, the latter conceded 25.
Balaji bowled 3.3 overs, conceding 41. He picked up a wicket, as did
Muralitharan, who bowled four overs, conceding 17.
Raina bowled four overs, conceding 18. He picked up two scalps.
