Dhoni-led CSK advance; Punjab disappointed

KXIP made three changes to their playing eleven – Reetinder Sodhi, Shalabh Srivastava and Vikramjeet Malik made way for Ramesh Powar, Sunny Sohal and V R V Singh.

CSK made a couple of changes to their playing (Micha)eleven – Hussey and Lakshmipathy Balaji made way for Justin Kemp and Sudeep Tyagi.

On winning the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, CSK’s skipper and the player of the match, chose to field.

The first Powerplay of KXIP’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the fourth over. They scored 49, and lost a wicket.

Mahela Jayawardene, whose eight-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and as many sixes, scored 21. Three overs into the match, he was caught by Tyagi. Albie Morkel broke the 34-run stand.

KXIP scored 50 off 6.1 overs (37 balls). CSK had conceded three extras at that point.

The second-wicket pair put on 50 off 42 balls. While Shaun Marsh’s contribution to the partnership was 22, the contribution of Kumar Sangakkara, KXIP’s skipper, to it was 30. Extras didn’t contribute to the partnership.

Sangakkara, whose 24-ball innings included five boundaries, eventually scored 33. Forty-seven balls after Jayawardene’s dismissal, Ravichandran Ashwin broke the 56-run partnership.

Yuvraj Singh scored a run. Suresh Raina had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he trapped him leg be‘four’ wicket, breaking the three-run stand.

KXIP scored 100 off 12.3 overs (75 balls). CSK had conceded three extras at that point.

Marsh’s half-century – which included half-a-dozen boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 34 balls.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off 42 balls. While Marsh’s contribution to the partnership was 34, Irfan Pathan’s contribution to it was 15. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a run.

KXIP scored 150 off 17.2 overs (104 balls). CSK had conceded four extras at that point.

Marsh, whose 57-ball innings included eight boundaries and five sixes, eventually scored 88. He was unbeaten, as was Pathan, who eventually scored 44. His 27-ball innings included four boundaries and a six.

CSK eventually conceded five extras. KXIP scored 192 for the loss of three wickets off 20 overs.

Shadab Jakati and Kemp bowled a wicketless over apiece. While the former conceded 14, the latter conceded a dozen.

Tyagi, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 24.

Doug Bollinger, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 39.

Morkel, Ashwin and Raina bowled four overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. They conceded 48, 33, and 20, respectively.

The third-wicket pair put on 50 off 25 balls. While Raina’s contribution to the partnership was 30, Subramaniam Badrinath’s contribution to it was 18. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was three.

Raina, whose 27-ball innings included five boundaries and three sixes, eventually scored 46. Thirty-four balls after Vijay’s dismissal, he was caught by Karan Goel. Rusty Theron broke the 62-run partnership.

CSK scored 100 off 11.3 overs (69 balls). KXIP had conceded four extras at that point.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off 38 balls. While Badrinath’s contribution to the partnership was 26, Dhoni’s contribution to it was 21. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was five.

Badrinath’s half-century – which included seven boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 35 balls.

He eventually faced 36 balls, scoring 53. Forty-two balls after Raina’s dismissal, he was stumped by Sangakkara. Piyush Chawla broke the 59-run partnership.

CSK scored 150 off 17.1 overs (103 balls). KXIP had conceded nine extras at that point.

Dhoni’s half-century – which included five boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 29 balls.

He eventually scored 54, and was unbeaten, as was Morkel, who scored 14. His eight-ball innings included a couple of boundaries.

KXIP eventually conceded 10 extras. CSK, who scored 195 for the loss of four wickets off 19.4 overs, won by half-a-dozen wickets with a couple of balls to spare.

Yuvraj, who bowled an over, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he was wicketless.

V R V, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 40.

Pathan, who bowled 3.4 wicketless overs, conceded 44.

Theron and the leggie bowled for overs each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 43, the (Chaw)latter conceded 28.

Powar, who bowled four overs, conceded 28. He picked up a couple of scalps.

While CSK advanced to the playoffs, the Kolkata Knight Riders were eliminated.
