Kochi beaten by Yuvraj-led PWI

Neither PWI nor KTK made and changes to their playing eleven.

On winning the toss, Mahela Jayawardene, KTK’s skipper, chose to bat.

The first Powerplay of KTK’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 37, and lost four wickets.

KTK’s openers failed to get off the mark. Brendon McCullum, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. A ball (Rob)into the match, he was caught by Uthappa off the bowling of Alfonso Thomas.

V V S Laxman, who faced three balls, didn’t get off the mark. Thirteen balls later, Wayne Parnell broke the 11-run stand.

Jayawardene, who faced three balls, scored a couple. Three balls later, he was caught by Uthappa. Parnell broke the two-run stand.

Parthiv, whose 19-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 24. A dozen balls later, he was caught by Graeme Smith. Parnell broke the (Pat)eleven-run stand.

KTK scored 50 off 8.1 overs (49 balls). PWI had conceded a couple of extras at that point.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 50 off 35 balls. While Brad Hodge’s contribution to the partnership was 15, Ravindra Jadeja’s contribution to it was 33. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple.

KTK scored 100 off 14.1 overs (86 balls). PWI had conceded four extras at that point.

Hodge, whose 36-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and as many sixes, eventually scored 39. Sixty-three balls after Patel’s dismissal, he was caught by Murali Kartik. Rahul Sharma broke the 88-run partnership.

Jadeja, whose 33-ball innings included three boundaries and as many sixes, eventually scored 47. Five balls later, he was caught by Parnell. Jesse Ryder broke the one-run stand.

Raiphi Gomez, whose 18-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 26. He was unbeaten.

The seventh-wicket pair put on four. Vinay Kumar, who faced a ball, scored a run. Five balls later, Parnell and Uthappa ran him out.

The eighth-wicket pair put on 30. Sreesanth, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored a run. Seventeen balls later, Uthappa and the substitute, Brendon’s older brother Nathan McCullum, ran him out.

Rudra Pratap Singh, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. He was unbeaten.

PWI eventually conceded 11 extras. KTK scored 148 for the loss of eight wickets off 20 overs.

Yuvraj Singh, PWI’s skipper, bowled a wicketless over, conceded a dozen.

Shrikant Wagh, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 10.

Kartik, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 30.

Ryder, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded eight. He picked up a wicket.

Thomas, who bowled three overs, conceded 31. He picked up a wicket.

Sharma, who bowled four overs, conceded 18. He picked up a wicket.

Parnell, who bowled four overs, conceded 35. He picked up three scalps.

Ryder, whose 10-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 17. Twenty-two balls into the match, he was caught by Vinay, who broke the 31-run stand.

PWI scored 50 off 6.5 overs (41 balls). KTK had conceded five extras at that point.

Smith, whose run-a-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 24. Twenty-four balls after Ryder’s dismissal, he was caught by Rudra Pratap. Jadeja broke the 23-run stand.

Mithun Manhas, whose 19-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. Thirteen balls later, he was caught by Jadeja. Needless to say, Hodge was in seventh heaven.

Yuvraj, who faced a dozen balls, scored eight. Nine balls later, he was caught by Patel. Hodge broke the 12-run stand.

PWI scored 100 off 13.3 overs (81 balls). The number of extras they had conceded at that point gave KTK no reason to be in seventh heaven.

Uthappa, whose 13-ball innings included three boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 31. Twenty balls after Yuvraj’s dismissal, Muttiah Muralitharan broke the 42-run stand.

Mohnish Mishra, the player of the match, scored 37. His 21-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and as many sixes. He was unbeaten.

The sixth-wicket pair put on three. Parnell, who faced five balls, scored a run. Half-a-dozen balls later, Gomez and Jadeja ran him out.

Sharma, whose nine-ball innings included a boundary, was unbea‘ten’.

PWI scored 150 off 18.5 overs (113 balls). In fact, they scored 151 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets, losing by four wickets with seven balls to spare. KTK had conceded 11 extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Rudra Pratap and Sreesanth bowled three wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 30, the latter conceded 21.

Vinay, who bowled three overs, conceded 15. He picked up a wicket.

Muralitharan, who bowled 3.5 overs, conceded 42. He picked up a wicket.

Jadeja, who bowled four overs, conceded 28. He picked up a wicket.

Hodge, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded 14. He picked up a couple of scalps.
