Chennai lose to Gilchrist-led KXIP

KXIP made one change to their playing eleven – Nathan Rimmington made way for Ryan Harris.

CSK made no changes to their playing eleven.

On winning the toss, Adam Gilchrist, KXIP’s skipper, chose to field.

The first Powerplay of CSK’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 31, and lost a couple of wickets.

CSK’s openers didn’t get off the (Ku)mark. Srikkanth Anirudha, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. A ball into the match, he was trapped leg before wicket by Praveen.

The second-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Suresh Raina, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was caught by Paul Valthaty, the player of the match, off the bowling of Praveen.

CSK conceded 50 off as many balls (8.2 overs). KXIP had conceded three extras at that point.

The third-wicket pair put on 50 off 48 balls. While Murali Vijay’s contribution to the partnership was 30, Subramaniam Badrinath’s contribution to it was 19. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was three.

Vijay’s half-century – which included three boundaries and as many sixes – came off 34 balls.

CSK conceded 100 off 12.5 overs (77 balls). KXIP had conceded four extras at that point.

Badrinath’s half-century – which included seven boundaries – came off 46 balls.

The third-wicket pair put on 100 off 75 balls. While Vijay’s contribution to the partnership was 54, Badrinath’s contribution to it was 44. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was four.

Vijay eventually scored 74 off 43 balls, which included half-a-dozen boundaries and four sixes. Eighty-seven balls after Raina’s dismissal, he was (Gilchri)stumped. Piyush Chawla broke the 124-run partnership.

CSK conceded 150 off 17.1 overs (103 balls). KXIP had conceded four extras at that point.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off 21 balls. While Badrinath’s contribution to the partnership was 16, the contribution of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, CSK’s skipper, to it was 36. Extras didn’t contribute to the partnership.

Badrinath, whose 56-ball innings included eight boundaries, eventually scored 66. He was unbeaten.

Dhoni, whose 20-ball innings included four boundaries and a couple of sixes, eventually scored 43. Thirty-one balls after Vijay’s dismissal, Harris broke the 64-run partnership.

KXIP eventually conceded five extras. CSK scored 188 for the loss of four wickets off 20 overs.

Abhishek Nayar, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 24.

Bhargav Bhatt, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 35.

Ryan McLaren, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 31.

Chawla, who bowled three overs, conceded 33. He picked up a wicket, as did Harris, who bowled four overs, conceding 25.

Praveen bowled four overs, including a maiden. He conceded 37, picking up a couple of scalps.

Gilchrist, whose 15-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, didn’t add to the aforementioned score. Thirty-five balls into the match, he was caught by Albie Morkel. Suraj Randiv broke the 61-run partnership.

Valthaty’s half-century – which included nine boundaries and a six – came off 23 balls.

KXIP scored 100 off 10.1 overs (61 balls).

The second-wicket pair put on 39. Shaun Marsh, who faced 14 balls, scored a dozen. Twenty-six balls after Gilchrist’s dismissal, Randiv and Anirudha ran him out.

Sunny Singh, whose 11-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 20. Nineteen balls later, he was caught by Shadab Jakati. Randiv broke the 36-run stand.

The fourth-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Nayar, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was trapped leg before wicket by Tim Southee.

KXIP scored 150 off 15.5 overs (95 balls).

Valthaty’s ton – which included 16 boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 52 balls.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 50 off 29 balls. While Valthaty’s contribution to the partnership was 36, Dinesh Karthik’s contribution to it was 15. Extras didn’t contribute to the partnership.

Valthaty, whose 63-ball innings included 19 boundaries, in addition to the aforementioned number of sixes, eventually scored 120. He was unbeaten, as was Karthik, who eventually scored 21. His 11-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six.

KXIP, who scored 193 for the loss of four wickets off 19.1 overs, won by half-a-dozen wickets with five balls to spare.

Scott Styris and Raina bowled a wicketless over apiece. While the former conceded 13, the latter conceded 12.

Jakati bowled 2.1 wicketless overs, conceding 28.

Ravichandran Ashwin bowled four wicketless overs, conceding 37.
