Jayawardene delighted; DD beat Punjab

KXIP made one change to their playing eleven – Nitin Saini made way for Paul Valthaty.

DD made one change to their playing (Mork)eleven – Ross Taylor made way for Morne.

On winning the toss, Mahela Jayawardene, DD’s skipper, chose to field.

The first Powerplay of DD’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 20, and lost four wickets.

Mandeep Singh, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. Seven balls into the match, he was caught by Naman Ojha. Umesh Yadav, the player of the match, broke the five-run stand.

Adam Gilchrist, KXIP’s skipper, scored nine off a dozen balls, which included a couple of boundaries. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Aaron. Yadav broke the 11-(Va)run stand.

Valthaty, who faced 10 balls, scored just a couple. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was caught by Irfan Pathan. Morkel broke the two-run stand.

David Hussey, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored three. Eight balls later, he was caught by Pathan. Yadav broke the two-run stand.

KXIP scored 50 off 10 overs (60 balls). DD had conceded half-a-dozen extras at that point.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 50 off 39 balls. While Chitnis’ contribution to the partnership was (Siddhar)thirty-four, Azhar Mahmood’s contribution to it was 14. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple.

Chitnis, whose 32-ball innings included five boundaries and a six, eventually scored 38. Fifty balls after Hussey’s dismissal, he was caught by Pathan. Andre Russell broke the 57-run partnership.

KXIP scored 100 off 16.2 overs (98 balls). DD had conceded eight extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Mahmood, whose 38-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, eventually scored 36. Twenty-four balls after Chitnis’ dismissal, he was caught by Unmukt Chand. Morkel broke the 45-run stand.

Gurkeerat Singh Mann, whose 11-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, scored 26. A couple of balls later, Morkel broke the one-run stand.

Piyush, who faced a couple of balls, scored a run. Three balls (Chaw)later, Morkel broke the run-a-ball stand.

Ryan Harris, whose six-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 15. He was unbeaten, as was Praveen Kumar, who faced a couple of balls, scoring three.

KXIP scored 141 for the loss of eight wickets off 20 overs.

Each of the five bowlers bowled four overs apiece.

Both Aaron and Pathan conceded 25 apiece, and were wicketless.

Russell conceded 51, picking up a wicket.

Yadav, whose spell included a maiden, conceded 19. He picked up three wickets.

Morkel conceded 20, picking up four scalps.

The first Powerplay of DD’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 44, without the loss of a wicket.

DD scored 50 off 6.1 overs (37 balls). KXIP had conceded five extras at that point. While Chand’s contribution to the partnership was 15, David Warner’s contribution to it was 30.

Chand, whose 24-ball innings included a couple of sixes, scored 18. Nine overs into the chase, he was caught by Gilchrist. Mahmood broke the 82-run partnership.

Warner’s half-century – which included five boundaries and four sixes – came off 25 balls.

DD scored 100 off 11.2 overs (68 balls). The number of extras they had conceded at that point gave KXIP no reason to be in seventh heaven.

Warner, whose 44-ball innings included 10 boundaries, in addition to the aforementioned number of sixes, eventually scored 79. Twenty-three balls after Chand’s dismissal, he was caught by Mandeep. Harris broke the 27-run stand.

Venugopal Rao, whose 19-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 21. He was unbeaten.

Although his innings included a boundary, Pathan had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored five. Nine balls after Warner’s dismissal, he was caught by Mahmood. Harris broke the eight-run stand.

Jayawardene, whose 10-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by Hussey. Mahmood broke the 18-run stand.

Ojha, whose six-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. He was unbeaten.

KXIP eventually conceded nine extras. DD, who scored 145 for the loss of four wickets off 18.2 overs, won by half-a-dozen wickets with 10 balls to spare.

Parvinder Awana bowled three overs, conceding 40. He was wicketless, as was Praveen and Chawla, who bowled four overs apiece. While the former conceded 33, the latter conceded 28.

Mahmood bowled 3.2 overs, conceding 23. He picked up two scalps, as did Harris, who bowled four overs, conceding 19.

As a result of this match, KXIP were eliminated, DD advanced to Qualifier 1, and MI qualified for the playoffs.
