RCB made four changes to their playing eleven – Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Sunil Joshi, Vinay Kumar and Anil Kumble made way for Twenty20 debutant Bharat Chipli, Wasim Jaffer, Balachandra Akhil and Dale Steyn.
CSK made one change to their playing (Mork)eleven – Muttiah Muralitharan
made way for Albie.
On winning the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, CSK’s skipper and the player
of the match, chose to bat.
The first Powerplay of CSK’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay
– was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 36, and lost a wicket.
Matthew Hayden, whose 19-ball innings included a couple of boundaries,
scored 13. Four overs into the match, Zaheer Khan broke the 22-run stand.
Parthiv Patel, whose 17-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and
a six, scored 21. Fifteen balls later, he was caught by Jacques Kallis. Praveen
Kumar broke the 20-run stand.
CSK scored 50 off 7.5 overs (47 balls). RCB had conceded three extras at
that point.
The third-wicket pair put on 41. Suresh Raina, whose 17-ball innings
included a boundary and a couple of sixes, scored 28. Thirty-three balls after Patel’s
dismissal, Jaffer and Mark Boucher ran him out.
CSK scored 100 off 14.4 overs (88 balls). RCB had conceded three extras
at that point.
The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off 31 balls. While Michael Hussey’s contribution
to the partnership was 28, Dhoni’s contribution to it was 22. Extras didn’t contribute
to the partnership.
CSK scored 150 off 18.3 overs (111 balls). RCB had conceded four extras
at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually
conceded.
Dhoni’s half-century – which included seven boundaries and a couple of
sixes – came off 24 balls.
He eventually scored 65 off 30 balls, which included nine boundaries and
three sixes. Forty-seven balls after Raina’s dismissal, he was caught by the
substitute, Vinay. Khan broke the 95-run partnership.
The fifth-wicket pair D(rav)idn’t get off the mark. Hussey, whose
37-ball innings included three boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 47. The
next ball, he was caught by Rahul, RCB’s skipper, off the bowling of Khan.
Jacob Oram, who didn’t face a ball, was unbeaten.
CSK scored 178 for the loss of five wickets off 20 overs.
Each of the five bowlers bowled four overs apiece.
Steyn, Kallis and Akhil were wicketless. They conceded 40, 36 and 34,
respectively.
Praveen, who conceded 29, picked up a wicket.
Khan, who bowled 38, picked up three scalps.

Nineteen balls into the chase, Manpreet Gony broke the 13-run stand.

The second-wicket pair put on 50 off 26 balls. While Jaffer’s contribution
to the partnership was 20, Ross Taylor’s contribution to it was 28. Extras’ contribution
to the partnership was a couple.
RCB scored 100 off 10.5 overs (65 balls). CSK had conceded five extras
at that point.
Jaffer’s half-century – which included five boundaries and a couple of
sixes – came off 32 balls.
He faced (Amarna)thirty-three balls, failing to add to the
aforementioned score. Forty-seven balls after Chipli’s dismissal, he was caught
by Oram. Palani broke the 89-run partnership.
Kallis, whose 10-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored
14. (Dho)Nineteen balls later, he was caught behind. Joginder Sharma broke the
25-run stand.
Taylor’s half-century – which included three boundaries and as many sixes
– came off 30 balls.
He faced 34 balls, eventually scoring 53. Half-a-dozen balls after
Kallis’ dismissal, he was caught by Raina. Amarnath broke the six-run stand.
Boucher, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored four. Seven balls later,
he was caught by Hussey. Gony broke the 10-run stand.
‘The Wall’, who faced a ball, D(rav)idn’t get off the mark. A couple of
balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Gony, who broke the one-run
stand.
Virat Kohli, whose seven-ball innings included a couple of boundaries,
scored a dozen. Four balls later, Morkel broke the six-run stand.
RCB scored 150 off 17.3 overs (105 balls). CSK had conceded half-a-dozen
extras at that point.
The eighth-wicket pair put on a dozen. Khan, whose six-ball innings
included a boundary, scored eight. Nine balls later, Raina and Dhoni ran him out.
The (Dho)ninth-wicket pair put on a run. Praveen, who faced five balls,
scored half-a-dozen. The next ball, Sharma, Oram and the man from Ranchi ran
him out.
Akhil, who faced three balls, scored a couple. He was unbeaten.
Steyn, who bowled a couple of balls, scored a run. Four balls after
Praveen’s dismissal, he was caught by Hussey. Sharma broke the three-run stand.
The number of extras they eventually conceded gave CSK no reason to be
in seventh heaven. RCB, who were dismissed for 165 off 19.4 overs, lost by 13 runs.
Oram, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 27.
Morkel, who bowled four overs, conceded 28. He picked up a wicket.
Sharma, who bowled 3.4 overs, conceded 27. He picked up two wickets, as
did Amarnath, who bowled four overs, conceding 38.
Gony, who bowled four overs, conceded 34. He picked up three scalps.
