Punjab disappointed; Warne-led RR win

RR made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Taruwar Kohli and Mahesh Rawat made way for Kamran Akmal and Pankaj Singh.

KXIP made a couple of (Kati)changes to their playing eleven – Simon and Pankaj Dharmani (who hasn’t played a Twenty20 since) made way for Mahela Jayawardene and Sunny Sohal.

On winning the toss, Yuvraj Singh, KXIP’s skipper, chose to bat.

The first Powerplay of KXIP’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 54, and lost a wicket.

Karan Goel, whose 21-ball innings included three boundaries and a couple of sixes, scored 26. Twenty-three balls into the match, Munaf Patel broke the 34-run stand.

KXIP scored 50 off 5.4 overs (34 balls). RR hadn’t conceded any extras at that point.

Kumar Sangakkara, whose eight-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 20. Ten balls later, he was caught by Shane Warne, RR’s skipper, who broke the 22-run stand.

The eighth over of RR’s innings was a five-ball over, called by Pakistani umpire Aleem Dar. Dinesh Salunkhe was the bowler.

Jayawardene, who faced four balls, scored a couple. Half-a-dozen balls later, he was stumped by Akmal. Salunkhe broke the eight-run stand.

James Hopes, whose run-a-ball stand innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. Nine balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Warne, who broke the run-a-ball stand.

KXIP scored 100 off 12.4 overs (76 balls). RR had conceded three extras at that point.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 50 off 38 balls. While Yuvraj’s contribution to the partnership was 49, Irfan Pathan’s contribution to it was five. Extras didn’t contribute to the partnership.

Yuvraj’s half-century – which included half-a-dozen boundaries and three sixes – came off 29 balls.

Yuvraj, who faced 34 balls, eventually scored 57. Forty-seven balls after Hopes’ dismissal, he was trapped leg before wicket by Warne, who broke the 63-run partnership.

The sixth-wicket pair (Trive)did not get off the mark. Irfan, whose 19-ball innings included a six, eventually scored a dozen. Three balls later, he was dismissed by Siddharth.

The seventh-wicket pair (Trive)did not get off the mark. Brett Lee, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Akmal off the bowling of the Gujarat medium-pacer.

The eighth-wicket pair put on 13. Sohal, who faced four balls, scored as many. Eight balls later, Ravindra Jadeja and Akmal ran him out.

Piyush Chawla, whose 11-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 24. He was unbeaten, as was Wilkin Mota, who faced a ball, scoring a run.

RR eventually conceded four extras. KXIP scored 166 for the loss of eight wickets off 20 overs.

Yusuf Pathan and Pankaj bowled a wicketless over apiece. While the former conceded 13, the latter conceded a dozen.

Shane Watson, the player of the match, bowled four wicketless overs, conceding 39.

Salunkhe, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded 21. He picked up a wicket, as was Patel, who bowled four overs, conceding 36.

Warne, who bowled four overs, conceded 19. He picked up three scalps.

The first Powerplay of RR’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 53, and lost three wickets.

Mohammad Kaif, whose eight-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Seven balls into the chase, he was caught by Sangakkara. Sreesanth broke the six-run stand.

Although his five-run innings included a boundary, Yusuf had no reason to be in seventh heaven – eight balls later, he was caught by Lee, who broke the 13-run stand.

Akmal, whose 10-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 15. Fourteen balls later, he was caught by Chawla. Hopes broke the 29-run stand.

RR scored 50 off 5.1 overs (34 balls). The number of extras they had conceded at that point gave KXIP no reason to be in seventh heaven.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off 36 balls. While Watson’s contribution to the partnership was 32, Darren Lehmann’s contribution to it was 17. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple.

Lehmann, whose 16-ball innings included three boundaries, didn’t add to the aforementioned score. Thirty-nine balls after Akmal’s dismissal, he was trapped leg before wicket by Irfan, who broke the 51-run partnership.

RR scored 100 off 11.2 overs (71 balls). KXIP had conceded 10 extras at that point.

Mota, who bowled an over, conceded a dozen. He was wicketless, as was Chawla, who bowled a couple of overs, conceding 27.

Sreesanth, who bowled 3.1 overs, conceded 38. He picked up a scalp, as did Lee, Hopes and Irfan, who bowled four overs apiece. They conceded 35, 33, and 21, respectively.
