Tendulkar leads; MI trounce Chennai

MI made one change to their playing eleven – Saurabh Tiwary made way for Sachin Tendulkar (who was leading the team, and chose to field on winning the toss).

CSK made one change to their playing eleven – Joginder (Shar)made way for Palani Amarnath.

The first Powerplay of CSK’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 28, and lost a couple of wickets.

Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan, whose 11-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 16. Seventeen balls into the match, he was caught by Rohan Raje. Shaun Pollock broke the 18-run stand.

Suresh Raina, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored just a run. Eighteen balls later, he was caught by Yogesh Takawale. Dwayne Br(av)oke the 10-run stand.

Stephen Fleming, whose 29-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 26. Sixteen balls later, Dhawal Kulkarni broke the 18-run stand.

The fourth-wicket pair failed to get off the mark. Chamara Kapugedera, who faced a couple of balls, didn’t open his account. A couple of balls later, he was caught by Takawale off the bowling of Kulkarni.

CSK scored 50 off 9.3 overs (57 balls). MI had conceded an extra at that point.

The fifth-wicket pair put on 50 off 40 balls. While Subramaniam Badrinath’s contribution to the partnership was 22, the contribution of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, CSK’s skipper, to it was 23. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was five.

CSK scored 100 off 16 overs (96 balls). MI had conceded half-a-dozen extras at that point.

Badrinath’s half-century – which included seven boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 32 balls.

He faced 33 balls, eventually scored 53. Sixty-one balls after Kapugedera’s dismissal, he was caught by Bravo, who broke the 95-run partnership.

Dhoni, whose 35-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries and a six, eventually scored 43. He was unbeaten.

CSK scored 150 off 19.3 overs (117 balls). MI had conceded a dozen extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Albie Morkel, who faced five balls, scored four. His runs came by way of a boundary. An over after Badrinath’s dismissal, he was caught by Robin Uthappa. Kulkarni broke the 15-run stand.

CSK scored 156 for the loss of half-a-dozen wickets off 20 overs.

Dominic Thornely, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded 10.

Raje, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 33.

Ashish Nehra, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 31.

Pollock bowled four overs, including a maiden. He conceded nine, picking up a wicket.

Bravo, who bowled four overs, conceded 37. He picked up a couple of wickets.

Kulkarni, who bowled four overs, conceded 33. He picked up three scalps.

The first Powerplay of MI’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 78, without the loss of a wicket.

MI’s openers put on 50 off 4.4 overs (28 balls). The number of extras they had eventually conceded at that gave CSK no reason to be in seventh heaven. While the contribution of Sanath Jayasuriya, the player of the match, to the partnership was 32, Tendulkar’s contribution to it was 11.

Tendulkar, whose 16-ball innings included a boundary and a six, eventually scored a dozen. Forty-four balls into the chase, Joginder Sharma broke the 82-run partnership.

Jayasuriya’s half-century – which included three boundaries and half-a-dozen sixes – came off 25 balls.

MI put on 100 off 9.4 overs (58 balls). CSK had conceded 15 extras at that point.

The second-wicket pair put on 50 off 34 balls. While Jayasuriya’s contribution to the partnership was 29, Uthappa’s contribution to it was 16. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was five.

Jayasuriya’s ton – which included seven boundaries and 10 sixes – came off 45 balls.

MI put on 150 off 13.3 overs (81 balls). CSK had conceded 16 extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Jayasuriya, whose 48-ball innings included nine boundaries and 11 sixes, eventually scored 114. He was unbeaten, as was Uthappa, who eventually scored 16. His 19-ball innings included a couple of boundaries.

MI, who scored 158 for the loss of a wicket off 13.5 overs, won by nine wickets off 37 balls to spare.

Kapugedera, who bowled five wicketless balls, conceded 26.

Muttiah Muralitharan and Lakshmipathy Balaji bowled a couple of wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 20, the latter conceded nine.

Morkel and Manpreet Gony bowled three wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 44, the latter conceded 31.

Sharma, who bowled three overs, conceded 24. He picked up the only wicket to fall.
