Chennai lose to Kumble-led RCB

CSK made three changes to their playing (Mork)eleven – George Bailey, Ravichandran Ashwin and Thilan Thushara made way for Matthew Hayden (the holder of Orange Cap), Albie and Shadab Jakati.

RCB made one change to their playing eleven – Balachandra Akhil made way for Vinay Kumar.

On winning the toss, Anil Kumble, RCB’s skipper, chose to field.

The first Powerplay of CSK’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 52, without the loss of a wicket.

CSK’s openers put on 50 off 5.2 overs (32 balls). RCB had conceded an extra at that point. While Parthiv Patel’s contribution to the partnership was 32, Hayden’s contribution to it was 17.

Patel, whose 27-ball innings included seven boundaries, eventually scored 36. Jacques Kallis had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the 61-run partnership.

Hayden, whose 19-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, eventually scored 26. Ten balls later, he was caught by Manish Pandey, the player of the match. Vinay broke the eight-run stand.

Ten overs into the match, the drinks break was taken. CSK had scored 74 for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Mahendra Singh Dhoni, CSK’s skipper, had scored eight, Suresh Raina had scored three.

CSK scored 100 off 13.2 overs (80 balls). RCB had conceded three extras at that point.

Raina, whose 19-ball innings included a boundary and a six, eventually scored 20. Thirty-three balls after Hayden’s dismissal, he was caught by Mark Boucher. Praveen Kumar broke the 35-run stand.

Dhoni, who faced 30 balls, eventually scored 28. Nineteen balls later, he was caught by Vinay. Van der Merwe broke the 21-run stand.

Morkel, whose 17-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 20. He was unbeaten.

Although his (Rob)innings included a six, Jacob Oram had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored nine. A dozen balls after Dhoni’s dismissal, he was caught by Uthappa. Vinay broke the 15-run stand.

Subramaniam Badrinath, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

RCB eventually conceded half-a-dozen extras. CSK scored 146 for the loss of five wickets off 20 overs.

Each of the five bowlers bowled four overs apiece.

Kumble, who was wicketless, conceded 30.

Praveen and Kallis conceded 26 each, picking up a wicket apiece.

Van der Merwe conceded 23, picking up a wicket.

Vinay, who bowled 38, picked up a couple of scalps.

Patel kept wicket instead of Dhoni from the first ball of RCB’s innings.

RCB scored 50 off 5.1 overs (32 balls). CSK had conceded an extra at that point.

The third-wicket pair put on 50 off 34 balls. While Pandey’s contribution to the partnership was 30, Rahul Dravid’s contribution to it was 21. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a run.

Ten overs into the chase, the drinks break was taken. RCB had scored 82 for the loss of a couple of wickets at that point. While Pandey had scored 43, Dravid had scored 26.

Pandey, whose 35-ball innings included seven boundaries, eventually scored 48. Fifty-eight balls after van der Merwe’s dismissal, Jakati broke the 72-run partnership.

RCB scored 100 off 13.5 overs (84 balls). CSK had conceded three extras at that point.

Dravid, whose 39-ball innings included half-a-dozen boundaries, eventually scored 44. Sixteen balls after Pandey’s dismissal, he was trapped leg before wicket by Muttiah Muralitharan, who broke the 16-run stand.

Virat Kohli, whose 17-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes, scored 24. He was unbeaten, as was Ross Taylor, who scored 17. His 12-ball innings included a couple of sixes.

CSK eventually conceded five extras. RCB, who scored 149 for the loss of four wickets off 18.5 overs, won by half-a-dozen wickets with seven balls to spare.

Oram, who bowled five wicketless balls, conceded 14.

Lakshmipathy Balaji, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 16.

Raina, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 23.

Gony, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded 23. He picked up a wicket.

Morkel, who bowled three overs, conceded 26. He picked up a wicket.

Jakati and Muralitharan bowled four overs apiece, picking up a scalp apiece. While the former conceded 29, the latter conceded 15.

RCB advanced to the final.
