Rain, Dhoni-led CSK disappoint Punjab

CSK made a couple of changes to their playing eleven – Murali Vijay and Jacob Oram made way for George Bailey and Manpreet Gony.

KXIP made one change to their playing eleven – Ramesh Powar made way for V R V Singh.

On winning the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, CSK’s skipper, chose to bat.

Owing to rain, the match was reduced to an 18-overs-a-side.

The first Powerplay of CSK’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the fifth over. They scored 45, and lost a wicket.

CSK’s openers didn’t get off the mark. Subramaniam Badrinath, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. A ball into the match, he was caught by V R V off the bowling of Irfan Pathan.

CSK scored 50 off 5.2 overs (32 balls). KXIP had conceded an extra at that point.

The second-wicket pair put on 50 off 31 balls. While the contribution of Matthew Hayden, the player of the match, to the partnership was 25, Suresh Raina’s contribution to it was 27. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a run.

Forty-five balls (7.3 overs) into the match, there was an interruption due to rain. CSK had scored 68 for the loss of a wicket at that point. While Hayden’s contribution to the partnership was 37, Raina’s contribution to it was 30.

Raina, whose 20-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, eventually scored 32. Fifty-four balls after Badrinath’s dismissal, he was caught by Karan Goel. Piyush Chawla broke the 76-run partnership.

CSK scored 100 off 11.5 overs (76 balls). KXIP had conceded an extra at that point.

Hayden’s half-century – which included half-a-dozen boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 44 balls.

The third-wicket pair put on 50 off 31 balls. While Hayden’s contribution to the partnership was 21, Dhoni’s contribution to it was 30. Extras didn’t contribute to the partnership.

CSK scored 150 off 15.5 overs (95 balls). KXIP had conceded a couple of extras at that point.

The third-wicket pair put on 100 off 46 balls. While Hayden’s contribution to the partnership was 46, Dhoni’s contribution to it was 49. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was five.

Hayden, whose 58-ball innings included eight boundaries and half-a-dozen boundaries, eventually scored 89. Forty-seven balls after Mahela Jayawardene. Sreesanth broke the 100-run partnership.

Dhoni’s half-century – which included seven boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 24 balls.

He eventually scored 56 off 27 balls, and was unbeaten, as was Albie Morkel, who faced a couple of balls, scoring as many.

KXIP eventually conceded half-a-dozen extras. CSK scored 185 for the loss of three wickets off 18 overs.

V R V and Yusuf bowled a couple of wicketless overs. While the former conceded 36, the (Abdul)latter conceded 18.

Goel, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 23.

Chawla, who bowled three overs, conceded 28. He picked up a wicket, as were Pathan and Sreesanth, who bowled four overs apiece. While the former conceded 38, the latter conceded 37.

KXIP’s target was revised to 187 off 18 overs.

Sunny Sohal, who faced a couple of balls, scored as many. A couple of balls into the chase, Morkel broke the run-a-ball stand.

Goel, whose 20-ball innings included a boundary, eventually scored 14. Thirty-six balls after Sohal’s dismissal, he was caught by Gony. Shadab Jakati broke the 51-run partnership.

Katich’s half-century – which included three boundaries and four sixes – came off 24 balls.

He eventually faced 25 balls, failing to add to the aforementioned score. Seventeen balls after Goel’s dismissal, he was caught by Jakati. Lakshmipathy Balaji broke the 31-run stand.

KXIP scored 100 off 10.5 overs (65 balls). CSK had conceded three extras at that point.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 50 off 26 balls. While the contribution of Yuvraj Singh, KXIP’s skipper, to the partnership was 21, Jayawardene’s contribution to it was 29. Extras’ contribution to the partnership was a couple.

KXIP scored 150 off 15.1 overs (91 balls). CSK had conceded four extras at that point.

Yuvraj’s half-century – which included four boundaries and a couple of sixes – came off 28 balls.

He eventually scored 58 off 36 balls, which included five boundaries, in addition to the aforementioned number of sixes. He was unbeaten, as was Jayawardene, who eventually scored 44. His 25-ball innings included three boundaries and a couple of sixes.

CSK eventually conceded half-a-dozen extras. KXIP, who scored 174 for the loss of three wickets off 18 overs, lost by a dozen runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method.

Gony, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded 19.

Sudeep Tyagi and Raina bowled a couple of wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 10, the latter conceded eight.

Muttiah Muralitharan, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 37.

Jakati, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded 20. He picked up a wicket.

Morkel, who bowled three overs, conceded 36. He picked up a wicket.
