Mumbai upset; Ganguly-led PWI win

MI made a couple of changes to their playing (Pat)eleven – Sachin Tendulkar and Abu Nechim made way for Suryakumar Yadav and Munaf.

PWI made half-a-dozen changes to their playing eleven – James Faulkner, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Rana, Mitchell Marsh, Shrikant Mundhe and Alfonso Thomas made way for Wayne Parnell, Steven Smith (the player of the match), Marlon Samuels, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Murali Kartik and Ashok Dinda.

On winning the toss, Harbhajan Singh, MI’s skipper, chose to field.

The first Powerplay of PWI’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 30, and lost three wickets.

PWI’s openers didn’t get off the mark. Manish Pandey, who faced five balls, didn’t open his account. Five balls into the match, he was dismissed by Lasith Malinga.

Sourav Ganguly, PWI’s skipper, faced half-a-dozen balls, scored three. Seventeen balls later, he was stumped by Dinesh Karthik. Harbhajan broke the 15-run stand.

Parnell, whose 14-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 11. Patel had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he broke the 12-run stand.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 20. Callum Ferguson, whose 13-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. Twenty-four balls later, Rohit Sharma ran him out.  

PWI scored 50 off 9.3 overs (57 balls). MI had conceded half-a-dozen extras at that point.

Uthappa, whose 33-ball (Rob)innings included three boundaries, scored 36. Thirty-eight balls after Ferguson’s dismissal, he was caught by Kieron Pollard, who broke the 44-run stand.

PWI scored 100 off 16 overs (96 balls). MI had conceded eight extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Samuels, who faced four balls, scored as many. Malinga had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he broke the 11-run stand.

Bhuvneshwar, who faced four balls, scored a couple. (Oj)Half-a-dozen balls later, Pragyan broke the three-run stand.

Smith, whose 39-ball innings included four boundaries, scored 32. Thirteen balls later, he was caught by Pollard. Patel broke the 23-run stand.

Kartik, whose nine-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 14. He was unbeaten.

The ninth-wicket pair put on a run. Rahul Sharma didn’t face a ball. Three balls after Smith’s dismissal, Karthik and Pollard ran him out.

PWI scored 129 for the loss of nine wickets off 20 overs.

James Franklin, who faced a wicketless over, conceded a dozen.

Harbhajan, who bowled three overs, conceded 16. He picked up a wicket, as did Pollard and Ojha, who bowled four overs apiece. While the former conceded 31, the latter conceded 23.

Patel and Malinga bowled four overs each, picking up a couple of scalps apiece. While the former conceded 26, the latter – whose spell included a maiden – conceded 16.

Rohit, who faced half-a-dozen balls, scored just a run. Five balls later, he was caught by Uthappa. Dinda broke the three-run stand.

MI scored 50 off 10.2 overs (62 balls). PWI had conceded four extras at that point.

Karthik, whose run-a-ball innings included four boundaries and a six, scored 32. Fifty-three balls after Rohit’s dismissal, he was stumped by Uthappa. Kartik broke the 49-run stand.

Yadav, who faced four balls, didn’t get off the mark. Nine balls later, Samuels broke the 10-run stand.

Pollard, who faced 11 balls, scored eight. Twenty-two balls later, Rahul broke the 13-run stand.

Franklin, whose 42-ball innings included a boundary, scored 32. Nine balls later, he was caught by Ferguson. Dinda broke the 11-run stand.

Malinga, whose three-ball innings included a boundary, scored five. Eight balls later, he was caught by Uthappa. Parnell broke the one-run stand.

MI scored 100 off 19.2 overs (116 balls). PWI had conceded five extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Harbhajan, whose 15-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. Five balls after Malinga’s dismissal, he was trapped leg be‘four’ wicket by Dinda.

Ojha, who faced a ball, didn’t get off the mark. He was unbeaten, as was Patel, who faced a couple of balls, scoring a run.

MI, who scored 101 for the loss of nine wickets off 20 overs, lost by 28 runs.

Bhuvneshwar, who faced a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 13.

Parnell, who bowled three overs, conceded 18. He picked up a wicket, as did Samuels and Rahul, who bowled four overs apiece. While the former conceded 21, the latter conceded 16.

Kartik, who bowled three overs, conceded 14. He picked up a couple of wickets.

Dinda, who bowled four overs, conceded 18. He picked up four scalps.
