Rain, Sehwag-led DD disappoint Kolkata

KKR made four changes to their playing eleven – Shreevats Goswami, Ryan ten Doeschate, Shakib Al Hasan and Lakshmipathy Balaji made way for Brendon McCullum, Debabrata Das, Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Marchant de Lange.

DD made half-a-dozen (Fin)changes to their playing (Mork)eleven – David Warner, Matthew Wade, Colin Ingram, James Hopes, Varun Aaron and Ashok Dinda made way for Aaron, Virender Sehwag (who was leading the team, and chose to field on winning the toss), Glenn Maxwell, Morne, Roelof van der Merwe and Shahbaz Nadeem.

Rain delayed the start of KKR’s innings. As a result, the match was reduced to a 12-overs-a-side match.

The first Powerplay of KKR’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the fourth over. They scored 31, and lost four wickets.

Although his innings included a couple of boundaries, McCullum had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored nine. Ten balls into the match, he was trapped leg before wicket by van der Merwe, who broke the 14-run stand.

Jacques Kallis, who faced four balls, scored as many. His runs came by way of a boundary. Half-a-dozen balls later, Morkel broke the run-a-ball stand.

The third-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Manoj Tiwary, who faced a ball, didn’t open his account. The next ball, he was dismissed by Morkel.

Yusuf Pathan, who faced four balls, didn’t open his account. Naman (Oj)had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he caught him. Umesh Yadav broke the 11-run stand.

KKR scored 50 off 6.2 overs (38 balls). The number of extras they had conceded at that point gave DD no reason to be in seventh heaven. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Gautam Gambhir, KKR’s skipper, whose 15-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 16. Sixteen balls after Yusuf’s dismissal, Morkel broke the 23-run stand.

The sixth-wicket pair put on a run. Das, whose nine-ball innings included a couple of sixes, scored 18. The next ball, Finch and Ojha ran him out.

Shukla, whose 17-ball innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes, scored 26. Twenty-three balls later, he was caught by Yogesh Nagar. Yadav broke the 31-run stand.

Rajat Bhatia, who faced nine balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – four balls later, he was stumped by Ojha. Van der Merwe broke the three-run stand.

The ninth-wicket pair put on eight. Brett Lee, whose five-ball innings included a six, scored nine. Four balls later, Yadav ran him out.

Iqbal Abdulla, who faced a ball, scored a run. He was unbeaten.

KKR scored 97 for the loss of nine wickets off a dozen overs.

Maxwell and Irfan Pathan, the player of the match, bowled a wicketless over apiece. While the former conceded 12, the latter conceded nine.

Nadeem bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceding 16.

Yadav bowled a couple of overs, conceding nine. He picked up a couple of wickets, as did van der Merwe, who bowled three overs, conceding 28.

Morkel bowled three overs, conceding 18. He picked up three scalps.

The first Powerplay of DD’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the fourth over. They scored 34, without the loss of a wicket.

Finch, whose 27-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 30. Thirty-eight balls into the chase, Kallis broke the 49-run stand.

DD scored 50 off 6.3 overs (39 balls). KKR had conceded three extras at that point.

Sehwag, whose 13-ball innings included a boundary and a six, scored 20. Half-a-dozen balls after Finch’s dismissal, he was caught by Abdulla. Bhatia broke the eight-run stand.

DD scored 100 (for the loss of a couple of wickets) off 11.1 overs (67 balls), winning by eight wickets with five balls to spare. KKR had conceded five extras at that point. That was, incidentally, the number of extras they eventually conceded.

Irfan, whose 20-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and three sixes, scored 42. He was unbeaten, as was Maxwell, who had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he scored three.

Abdulla and Yusuf bowled a wicketless over apiece. While the former conceded eight, the latter had no reason to be in seventh heaven.

Lee bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceding 15.

De Lange bowled three wicketless overs, conceding 36.

Bhatia bowled seven balls, conceding as many. He picked up a scalp, as did Kallis, who bowled three overs, conceding 23.
