On winning the toss, Harbhajan Singh, MI’s skipper, chose to bat.
The first Powerplay of MI’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay
– was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 42, without the loss of
a wicket.
MI’s openers scored 50 off 7.2 overs (45 balls). PWI had conceded a
couple of extras at that point. While James Franklin’s contribution to the
partnership was 25, Sachin Tendulkar’s contribution to it was 23.
Franklin, whose 23-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, didn’t
add to the aforementioned score. Forty-seven balls into the match, he was
caught by Mithun Manhas. Bhuvneshwar Kumar broke the 50-run partnership.
The second-wicket pair put on half-a-dozen. Rohit Sharma, who faced five
balls, scored three. Eight balls later, Steve Smith and Robin Uthappa ran him
out.
Tendulkar, whose 35-ball innings included four boundaries, eventually scored
34. Three balls later, he was caught by Uthappa. Ashish Nehra broke the 25-run
stand.
Peterson, whose 14-ball (Rob)innings included a boundary, scored 13.
Nine balls later, he was caught by Sourav Ganguly, PWI’s skipper. Needless to say,
Nehra wasn’t in seventh heaven.
Dinesh Karthik, whose 22-ball innings included a boundary, scored 18. He
was unbeaten.
Ambati Rayudu, who faced three balls, scored a run. Eight balls after Peterson’s
dismissal, Kumar broke the four-run stand.
The sixth-wicket pair put on a run. Thisara Perera, who faced four
balls, didn’t get off the mark. Smith had a reason to be in seventh heaven – he
ran him out.
The seventh-wicket pair didn’t get off the mark. Harbhajan, who faced a
ball, didn’t open his account. The (Way)next ball, he was caught by Parnell off
the bowling of Dinda.
MI scored 100 off 18.2 overs (111 balls). PWI had conceded 10 extras at
that point.
The eighth-wicket pair put on 26. Lasith Malinga, the player of the
match, scored 14. His run-a-ball innings included a boundary and a six.
Twenty-one balls after Harbhajan’s dismissal, Smith and Uthappa ran him out.
The ninth-wicket pair put on a run. Ojha, who faced a ball, scored a
run. A couple of balls later, Uthappa ran him out.
PWI eventually conceded 11 extras. MI, who scored 120 for the loss of
nine wickets off 20 overs.
Michael Clarke, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded nine.
Murali Kartik, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 27.
Parnell, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 18.
Dinda bowled four overs, including a maiden. He conceded 34, picking up
a wicket.
Kumar, who bowled three overs, conceded nine. He picked up a couple of
scalps, as did Nehra, who bowled four overs, conceding 19.

Clarke, whose 15-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored
14. Nine balls later, he was trapped leg be‘four’ wicket by Harbhajan.
Smith, whose faced half-a-dozen balls, scored just a couple. Nine balls
later, Ojha broke the three-run stand.
PWI scored 50 off 11.3 overs (69 balls). MI had conceded an extra at
that point.
Ganguly, whose 24-ball innings included a boundary, scored 16.
Forty-three balls after Smith’s dismissal, Malinga broke the 47-run stand.
PWI scored 100 off 17.3 overs (105 balls). MI had conceded four extras
at that point.
Manhas, whose 34-ball innings included five boundaries, scored 42. He
was unbeaten.
Parnell, who faced four balls, scored a couple. Eight balls after
Ganguly’s dismissal, he was caught by Peterson. Malinga broke the 11-run stand.
Kumar, whose six-ball innings included a boundary, was unbea‘ten’.
MI eventually conceded half-a-dozen extras. PWI, who scored 119 for the
loss of half-a-dozen wickets off 20 overs, lost by a run.
Perera bowled an over, conceding eight. He was wicketless, as was Franklin,
who bowled three overs, conceding 20.
Patel and Ojha bowled four overs, including 24, each, picking up a
wicket apiece.
Malinga and Harbhajan bowled four overs each, picking up two scalps
apiece. While the former conceded 25, the latter conceded 18.
