CSK made no changes to their playing eleven.
RR made three changes to their playing eleven – Johan Botha, Dishant Yagnik and Pankaj Singh made way for Shreevats Goswami, Stuart Binny and Kevon Cooper.
On winning the toss, Rahul Dravid, RR’s skipper, chose to bat.
The first Powerplay of RR’s innings – which was the mandatory Powerplay – was between the first and the sixth over. They scored 41, and lost a wicket.
Ajinkya Rahane, whose 10-ball innings included three boundaries, scored 15. Twenty-eight balls into the match, he was caught by Nuwan Kulasekara broke the 36-run stand.

Dravid, whose 28-ball innings included three boundaries and a six, scored 26. Twenty balls after Rahane’s dismissal, he was caught by Doug Bollinger. Shadab Jakati broke the 14-run stand.

Shah’s half-century – which included four boundaries and three sixes – came off 40 balls.
Menaria, whose 34-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, eventually scored 36. Sixty-five balls after Dravid’s dismissal, he was caught by Jakati. Bollinger broke the 92-run partnership.
Shah eventually scored 52 off 43 balls. Seven balls later, he was caught by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, CSK’s skipper. Kulasekara broke the four-run partnership.
Brad Hodge, who faced five balls, scored three. He was unbeaten.
CSK eventually conceded 14 extras. RR scored 146 for the loss of four wickets off 20 overs.
Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja bowled three wicketless overs each, conceding 32 apiece.
Jakati, who bowled a couple of overs, conceded a dozen. He picked up a scalp, as did Bollinger, Ravichandran Ashwin and Kulasekara, who bowled four overs apiece. They conceded 31, 19, and 17, respectively.

Dhoni, whose 12-ball innings included a boundary, scored 15. He was unbeaten, as was Bravo, who scored 16. His 10-ball innings included a boundary.
RR eventually conceded a couple of extras. CSK, who scored 147 for the loss of three wickets off 20 overs, lost by seven wickets.
Binny and Menaria bowled a couple of wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 20, the latter conceded 10.
Amit Singh and Trivedi bowled four wicketless overs apiece. While the former conceded 45, the latter conceded (Siddhar)thirty.
Hogg, who bowled four overs, conceded 18. He picked up a wicket.
Cooper, who bowled four overs, conceded 23. He picked up a couple of scalps.
